A Hawaiian-Irish links

Architect Robin Nelson left the topography of the unspoiled dunes terrain alone when crafting this links which plays, from the Black tees, to a USGA Slope Rating of 141; Maui's strongest!

Tips: Local Knowledge

A little bit of local knowledge can go a long way at The Dunes. Hole No. 4 is notorious for high scores. But don't be intimidated: It's growl is louder than its bite. Recently redesigned, No. 4 has a wider fairway and doesn't demand that you hit a very long tee shot. Rather than risk losing your ball, play a mid-iron short and right of the fairway bunker. You'll have lots of room for your second shot. Now for the good part: What locals have learned (the hard way) is that the new putting surface, affectionately called the 'Augusta green', has a false front toward the right. It'd send a short approach rolling backward to a grassy depression. So take a little extra club to play safely past the false front and leave yourself with a sure putt. Now for a word of caution: If the hole is on the front, you'll be putting downhill, and down grain. Play it smart and lag it from above the hole. You'll likely leave with a par; always a good score at The Dunes.
